SHINY is an awards platform for filmmakers, born in London.

We celebrate great work. We give out awards. But it doesn’t end there.

There are people looking for new talent, looking for a fresh perspective, looking for someone new to create with. SHINY was created to connect those people with filmmakers waiting to be discovered.

The Shiny Awards are very excited collaborate with production company Mt MELVIL, who are based in LA and Tokyo, to present the first Japan Shiny Awards this November.

Together, we’ll bring together the commercial production community to celebrate the exceptional emerging directing talent based in Japan & the Japanese diaspora worldwide.

As with every Shiny event, diversity remains central: at least 70% of the work screened will be directed by filmmakers from under-represented backgrounds.

ENTRIES NOW OPEN

Open to directors based in Japan or directors across the globe who consider themselves part of the Japanese diaspora. We invite bold short-form work across commercials, music videos, documentary, animation and narrative - all genres are welcome.
We’re looking for originality, engagement and a distinct creative voice.
All entries must be under fifteen minutes and from up & coming directors (for full eligibility details, click on the ‘ENTER WORK’ button to the right .

WHY ENTER

• Selected films will screen in Tokyo to an audience of producers, creatives and advertising production industry decision-makers.

• All shortlisted entries will be shown at the Japan Shiny Awards, the directors and plus 1 will invited to meet & connect with the industry guests.

• All directors who enter are invited to a director treatment workshop hosted by Mt Melvil in Tokyo.

• In addition, selected directors will win an additional screening at the next Shiny Awards in London, plus winners will have the opportunity to receive post production, casting and music support by our sponsors, Nomad, Black Cat White Cat Music and KAIJU, plus a free grade from Creative Outpost. Winners will be announced at the Tokyo event.

• All longlisted entries will be added to the Shiny List - a global directory of up & coming director talent, regularly used by Shiny’s member companies.

• Entries will be viewed by leading industry professionals - all entrants hear back within 2-3 weeks of entry
